A ‘global village’ has sprung up throughout the globe. This oxymoron is a result of the internet’s enormous contribution and the way it has successfully brought the world together in a village-like community throughout the globe. Marshall McLuhan, a brilliant thinker and futurist, invented the term “Global Village” back in the 1970s. Internet technology’s rapid expansion and persistent upward trajectory have made this a reality. Before delving into the numbers, it’s easy to think of all the ways the internet has helped transportation, communication, entertainment, medicine, education, R&D, and logistics. Over the past few decades, the internet’s expansion has been remarkable. Throughout the world, this technology has already made its way into the everyday lives of the masses, and the evidence speaks for itself.

In 1995, there were only roughly 16 million internet users (about 0.4 percent of the world’s population). It currently has more than 5000 million users (December 2021).  17 years ago, the internet was just beginning to take off. It’s important to acknowledge the people and other new technology that have made the internet more widely available, beneficial, and ubiquitous, of course.

The term “internet” is commonly used to describe a global network of networks owned and controlled by businesses, universities, governments, and other private organizations. As a way of exchanging ideas and information, it serves this purpose. While racing against the clock, it has already met and beyond all of the goals set forth by the project’s creators and architects.

As a result of the internet’s influence, even plants and animals have changed. The vintage years of this technology and the process by which it developed are easily recalled if you are around 35 years of age. As the internet has grown into a global platform, it has transformed how people communicate and how businesses conduct themselves on a national and international scale. Communication is no longer hindered by geographical distances thanks to this new technology. The phrase “global village” has taken on a whole new meaning because of it. When it comes to communication, the internet is the best and most ubiquitous method available to billions of people.

Many protocols, including HTTP and https, TCP/IP, and IPv4, are to be credited for the internet’s rapid development. This includes things like Ethernet, routers and routing protocols; document object models; domain name resolution (DNS); security measures like firewalls and fiberoptics; and other technological components that have helped make the internet a huge success.

This explanation would be incomplete without including the importance played by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). When it comes to enabling the Web to reach its full potential, W3C has supplied all of the critical interoperable technologies it has developed over the years. W3C has made countless contributions to the development of internet technology as a venue for information, communication, commerce, and collective learning.

The internet’s continuous expansion throughout the years is what’s most fascinating and heartening about it. There are new goods and services being developed with this technology every day. As a result, a wide range of businesses have been able to flourish and provide a positive return on investment. Smartphones are the latest craze in the internet technology sector. Recently, it has injected new life into the long-dormant telecommunications and entertainment industries by introducing innovative ideas and energizing them for greater success in the years to come. There is therefore no danger in predicting a continuation and possibly even an improvement of the expanding trend of internet technology that began a few decades ago.
